Day 1: Arrival and Lake Akan Exploration

  • Arrive at Lake Akan and check into your accommodation.
  • Take a leisurely walk along the shores of Lake Akan, enjoying the tranquil scenery and fresh mountain air.
  • Visit the Ainu Kotan, a nearby village where you can learn about the indigenous Ainu culture, see traditional crafts, and shop for souvenirs.
  • Relax in one of the many outdoor hot springs (onsen) overlooking the lake, such as the famous Lake Akan Onsen.

Day 2: Outdoor Activities

  • Start your day with a boat tour of Lake Akan to explore its mysterious blue waters and the volcanic islands of Churui and Churui-ko.
  • Hike to the top of Mount Oakan for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Akan below (note: this hike is recommended for experienced hikers).
  • Explore the Akanko Ainu Theater Ikoro for cultural performances and demonstrations of traditional Ainu dance and music.
  • In the evening, take a guided nature walk around the lake to spot wildlife such as the rare marimo algae balls and the endangered red-crowned cranes.

Day 3: Mashu and Kushiro

  • Take a day trip to Lake Mashu, one of the clearest lakes in the world, known for its stunning blue waters and scenic viewpoints.
  • Visit the Mashu Lake Observatory to admire the breathtaking views of the lake from above.
  • Explore the nearby town of Kushiro, known for its wetlands and birdwatching opportunities.
  • Visit the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park Visitor Center to learn about the area’s unique ecosystem and take a guided tour of the wetlands.

Day 4: Departure

  • Depending on your departure time, you may have some free time to relax or explore more of Lake Akan.
  • Check out of your accommodation and depart for your next destination.
